About

Passing Agriculture generation to generation

In 2018, Forest Dyess and his grandson James Newman purchased Cherokee Warehouse. The Dyess family has a long history of farming in the Rusk area, running a dairy, and raising cattle. Forest and James had a vision when they bought Cherokee Warehouse: to provide a one-stop-shop for their town that could help keep agriculture alive for generations to come.

James Newman runs the day-to-day operations of Cherokee Warehouse but they are not just local business owners. They are also passing down the family’s agricultural legacy to the next generation. You may often see their children in the store, helping out with tasks such as making popcorn, loading feed, or learning the ins and outs of the cash register.

In Loving memory of our co-founder

Forest Dyess

-2023-

You could find him at the “John Deere House” every morning, except Sunday. Handwritten tickets, notes, cow medicines, maybe a package or two of crackers, a Dr. Pepper and probably a toothpick amongst his organized chaos😉.

Mr. Forrest Dyess never met a stranger and if by chance he didn’t know you, that would change within a few minutes and you walked away with a lifelong friend. He took great pride in his family and numerous friendships. He had a quiet, soft side but you also knew quickly if he was not in agreement with a situation or idea. He was a devoted husband and father and would do anything in this world for Mrs. Reta, their three children, and those he dearly loved.

I’m not sure he ever fully grasped the impact he made on those around him and in Cherokee County, but he definitely left a legacy.

He was VERY strong in his faith and his relationship with Jesus Christ, and because he had accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior- he closed his eyes here on Earth and opened them to something more beautiful than 1000 green acres of grazing cows! We can only imagine the beauty he is experiencing now… and we believe his greeting to Heaven must have gone something like “Well done my good and faithful servant.. You are HOME.”

Cherokee Warehouse is honored to be founded on his wisdom and dedication to farming, cattle, and love for his community. He will forever be missed.
